It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas – at least for the team at Adopt-A-Beast who are selling tickets for their annual Christmas Raffle at the Rocky Racecource Markets next Sunday, October 24.
Founder Nathalie Grassi said she came up with the idea for Adopt-A-Beast after the floods at Julia Creek three years ago. The non-profit organisation aims to help farmers restock and replenish herds during times of natural disasters.
She said the group had come a long way since its formation.
“We only started fundraising last year and have raised $3500,” she said.
“It’s been a hard slog, but we have an eight person team now, including our own fundraising manager. We’re even making our own tote bags, tee-shirts and business cards, so we’re looking more and more professional!”
Nathalie said she’d even started getting recognised for her work with the group.
“When I went to Baree Markets, a couple came in that recognised my voice and asked if I was on Landline. I said no but I was ABC Radio.
“Our message is getting out there slowly but surely.”
This year, the group has collected $1186.50 worth of donations for their Christmas Raffle, which will be drawn on 11 December at the Gracemere Hotel.
Tickets in the raffle are $3 each.
The major prize, valued at $645, includes a $300 helicopter flight for two, $160 limousine ride, $110 bottle of French champagne from Bartlett’s Tavern and a $75 burnt wood sign from Oakey.
Asked how she scored a helicopter flight for the first prize, Nathalie joked she was good at begging.
Thanks to Facebook groups, two prizes came from interstate, including one from New South Wales and one from Victoria.
